1.The word sincere - from the latin words sine cera - meaning without wax - "sculptors use to hide flaws in their work by smearing hot wax into the cracks and then covering the wax with stone dust, this was considered cheating and therefore any sculpture "without wax" was considered a sincere piece of art" This interesting fact was discovered whilst reading the new book by Dan Brown "The Lost Symbol" 2. The expression "Left On The Shelf" - In Shakespearean times people used to eat their food from a single wooden block which was flat on one side for dry foods like bread and cheese and concave on the other side for wet food, after use the wooden block would be wiped off and placed on the shelf. When a woman married she would take her wooden block with her to her marital home, if a woman never married her wooden block was "left on the shelf". 3. The expression "The Upper Crust" - In Shakespearean times bread was made by placing the dough straight on to the hot bricks of the oven, which was located at the side of the fireplace. The bread would then be sliced horizontally, the workers would be given the slices of bread that were black through being placed directly on to the hot bricks. Your place in the social structure of the household would determine the part of the loaf you would be given, with the Lord of the house being given the very top of the bread - the "Upper Crust" These interesting facts were learnt from a guide whilst visiting Anne Hathaways Cottage in Stratford Upon Avon, England (The home belonging to the family of William Shakespeare's' wife). |
